As with all good small holdings we had to have chickens … and as we never do things by the book we had to have ‘giant’ chickens …
Due to bird flu movement restrictions we had to grow our chickens from eggs (another steep learning curve – including using lolly sticks to hold twisted legs together whilst they healed).
We have added a few normal size hens – and did eat a couple of the cockerels just before Christmas (very tasty) .. when hatching you end up with basically 50-50 split 🙁
This is Hedwig, our cockerel, who has his work cut out looking after 12 hens. All our hens have names, Stuffing & Cracker – named at Christmas and Cadbury & Bournville – named at Easter, to mention a few.
We currently have 10 more eggs in the incubator so who knows how many more hens Hedwig will have to look out for!
